The USS North Carolina
This battleship class was an incredible adventure to explore. 

I started with a guide (who was a Navy veteran from Albany). 


After his 90 minute informative tour, sharing his stories of personal experience in the Navy which gave greater insight into life on these ships, 
















I spent another 2 hours exploring the nooks and crannies of this historic artifact. Just look at the battle flags to get an inkling of the significance of this ship and its crews over its service to protecting freedom in the world.














 I am so grateful that the city of Wilmington and the residents of North Carolina worked so hard to save this grand lady from the scrap heap. School groups used to have fund raising sales to aid in its preservation. I met a grandmother who was visiting the ship with her grandchildren and was telling the tale of being part of this great effort when she was a young school girl.

What a magnificent animal that is so well adapted to the varied extremes of its environment. This area has also managed to preserve its prairie dog populations, as well. As a result of the effects of these dog towns, they have been able to successfully reintroduce black-footed ferrets and the burrowing owl populations have increased. Ferrets are nocturnal and the owls are shy so no pictures. I did see quite a few burrowing owls, but they were in the distance. The distinguishing characters, by far, are the land formations. South Carolina Flooding throughout this region was incredible, even months after the hurricanes had passed. Everywhere I went in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina was severely impacted. Raccoon tracks Local resident This road is just one example of how severe the floodng was and I met a fellow who lived 7 miles further down the road and hadn't been able to get to his house for over a month.
