Winters spent in North Carolina, first with gliders, then the real test.

I was fortunate enough to be here for the annual celebration of those first flights (December 17th).
This year saw the induction of Kathryn
Johnson into the aviation hall of fame for her outstanding years at
NASA, including putting John Glenn into space and safely back to
Earth. This HOF is also located at the Wright's Field site. If you
haven't seen the movie “Hidden Figures”, it should be on your
list to watch; or better yet, read the book.
The Candy bomber from the Berlin drop in 1945, copiloted by the 97 year old pilot that actually started the "candy drop".
When the Wright brothers travelled here
during the winters, there weren't many people but they were ably
assisted by the “life saving stations” that would later become
the Coast Guard.
Truly an inspiring place to spend quality time. Here is the monument up close, and the view from the top.
